WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FINALIST FOR TRURO
James Honeybone has become the first Truro fencer to make the final of the World Youth Championships. After being incorrectly seeded by the organisers, James had a tough pool, and just made it through with 2 wins and 3 defeats. Then he found his form, defeating Hong Kong's Wong 15-5, then taking out the number 1 seed, Lopez-Mendez of Spain, 15-12, before facing the USA's number 1 Brian Cheney in the L16. Here, James found his best fencing, and produced a scintillating 2nd half to win 15-10 and make the final of 8. In the final 8 James lost out to Korea's Kim 15-8. The Truro fencer is only the 3rd British sabreur ever to make a world final at his level.

Katrina Smith took her first fencing title, with an excellent victory at the Wellington LPJS Epee. Fencing in the girls' U17 category, Katrina cruised through to the L4 where she defeated Natalia Davey of Wellington Swords. In the final Katrina met another Wellington fencer, Sophie Townsend, and after a long, cagey fight the Truro fencer won through 7-6 and clinched the gold medal.

Coventry Leon Paul Junior Series Sabre: Truro's youth sabreurs dominated the U13 and U11 age groups at the Coventry LPJS. In the U11 Boys' Category Fraser Woodburn won his second consecutive Gold Medal, defeating Truro Club-mate Will Deary in the final. Will Deary took the Silver medal, and Josh Maxwell won bronze, so the club clinched gold, silver and bronze in this category! In the U13s, Robert MacPherson won his first LPJS gold medal, taking the final 10-4 against Camden's William Moore. Tom Hendra put in another good performance, reaching the final 8 and finishing in 5th place. Sam Holmes was place 17th in his second competition. In the Under 9 Girls event, Caitlin Maxwell fencing in her first competition took the gold medal with a convincing 10-4 victory. Caitlin is just 8 years old, and is one of Truro's latest young talents.

At the National Veterans' Age Group Championships there was success for Truro's fencers. Gordon Coombs won silver in the 70+ age group, and was placed 6th in the 60+ age group. Joan Coombs took bronze in the 70+ age Group, and Rodney Greenhalgh was placed 3rd in the 60+ age group, also winning a bronze medal.

March 2008

Birmingham International: Truro's James Honeybone became the youngest ever Birmingham international Champion, winning the Men's Sabre competition 15-11 in an exciting final against Alex Crutchett (Brentwood). Jon Salfield was placed 9th and Al Jupp 10th in the same category, with Mike Rogers making the L32. In Men's Foil Matthew Billing made the L32, with Paul Caine in the L64, and Katrina Smith and Zoe Robinson made the L64 in Women's Epee and Foil respectively.

At the National Veterans Championships, Truro had a very successful day with a number of titles and medals. In the Sabre event, Richard Bonehill was placed 2nd overall, and will represent GB at the 2008 World and European Veterans Championships. Gordon Coombs won the 70+ category, and Keith Barnett made the final, finishing 6th. In Women's Sabre Joan Coombs won the 70+ category. In a big Men's Epee field of 60, Keith Barnett was placed an excellent 3rd, his first medal at the veterans championships.

February 2008

British Youth Championships: Truro's Young epee and Sabre fencers competed at the BYCs in Stoke. In the Epee George Burwood made an excellent L16 in the U18 age group, with Steven Pinkerton matching this achievement in the U14 category, and James Rowe placing 14th in the U12s. In the sabre events, Truro triumphed in two categories, with Tobi Ogunbode winning the national U12 title with a dominant display, and Noah Rogerson taking gold in the U14s with an equally comfortable victory. Will Hosking made the final 8 of Under 11 Category, and Alice Maidwell-Smith also made the final 8 in the Girls' U14 event. Robert Macpherson made the L16 in the U14 event.

Hampshire Open: Maxine McCombie took the Silver Medal in Women's Sabre, with Felicity Kerr winning through to the L8, and Maggie McWilliams making the L16. In men's Foil Matthew Billing won an excellent bronze medal in a strong field

World Championship Selections: Truro's James Honeybone and Katie Hendra will both fence for the Great Britain at the World Youth Championships in April. James has qualified for both the Under 17 and Under 20 events, and will also fence in the U20 team event. Katie will compete in both individual and team events in the U20 Women's Sabre category

January 18th 2008

Truro’s Maxine McCombie has been selected for the 8-strong British Grand Prix sabre squad for the first time. Maxine will compete at the Orleans Grand Prix in France on February 9th. Club-mates Alistair Jupp and Jon Salfield have both been selected for the British Men’s Grand Prix Squad competing in Athens and Budapest in February.

January 12th

Four Truro youngsters competed at an Under 15 international for Great Britain. Noah Rogerson (12), Will Hosking (11), Robert MacPherson (12) and Tobi Ogunbode (11) were 4 of the youngest fencers in the GB squad, and all acquitted themselves well at the tough under 15 in Moneteau in France. Tobi was the pick of the bunch, with a superb last 32 in his first competition at this level.

December 21st-23rd

Truro's first Training Camp was a great success. 34 fencers took part in foil, epee and sabre training, with visiting fencers from as far as Aberdeen. Head Coach, Jon Salfield, is planning an Easter and Summer Training Camp for 2008.

December 8th

James Honeybone qualified for the world Junior Championships with an outstanding performance at the Lignano World Cup in Italy. James was placed 10th in a world-class field, and confirms his place at the World Cadet and Junior Championships next April.

December 1st

Maxine McCombie won her first major title, with a gold medal at the Hereford and Worcester Open. Truro's Maggie McWilliams reached the final 8. In the men's event, James Honeybone took his second national open title of 2007, defeating Truro team-mate Jon Salfield 15-14 in an exciting final.

Nov 8th

James Honeybone reached the final of the Kenten Cadet international in Germany. In the younger age groups Truro fencers produced the best British performances, with Fraser Woodburn reaching the U11 final, Tobi Ogunbode the U12 final and Noah Rogerson the Under 13 final.

Nov 1st

Welsh Open: James Honeybone became the youngest-ever winner of the Welsh Open, clinching the Men's Sabre title. Truro's Al Jupp was 3rd, with Jon Salfield 9th. In the women's sabre event Maxine McCombie continued her great season with a bronze medal

Oct 14th

2 Truro foilists, Richard Rapier and Alice Maidwell-Smith, qualified for the national age group championships by reaching their respective finals at he South West qualifying tournament. Richard took the bronze medal, and Alice the silver in their categories. Both will compete in Stoke in January at the National Championships.

Richard receives Top Sporting Honour 29.11.2007

Richard Bonehill the President of Truro Fencing Club has been honoured with The Torch Trophy Trust Award in recognition for his outstanding voluntary work for British Fencing . The award was presented to Richard by His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent at a ceremony that took place at The Army and Navy Club , Pall Mall , London on the 29th November 2007 . The Torch Trophy Trust was founded in 1962 with the object of encouraging and recognising voluntary work for sports throughout the United Kingdom . Before receiving his trophy from The Duke of Kent , Christine Janes MBE (nee Christine Truman ) read a tribute to Richard detailing his accomplishments in the world of fencing .

“ Richard as a club member , assistant coach , senior coach and most recently President of Truro Fencing Club has been the inspiration which has enabled the club to become one of the most highly respected and successful fencing clubs in the United Kingdom . Since 1999 , twenty eight club members have represented their country at international level . Richard’s coaching expertise , organisational abilities and unflinching dedication has produced a string of champions and international fencers in all three weapons. His infectious enthusiasm is a constant inspiration to every member of Truro Fencing Club”.

Interviewed after the event Richard commented , “Not only was it a wonderful experience to meet such sporting greats such as Sir Bobby Charlton (World Cup Winner 19660) Roger Uttley (former England Rugby Captain) and Dame Mary Glen Haig (five times Olympic fencer and member of the International Olympic Committee) but it was a very humbling experience to meet so many volunteers who had worked for so many years for their respective sports . I would like to thank Penny Spink and Keith Smith of British Fencing for their nomination . Any award such as this is inevitably the result of a tremendous team effort . In particular I would like to pay tribute to Jon Salfield Head Coach at Truro Fencing Club whose tremendous work with young people has produced numerous talented fencers and champions. I am very proud to accept the Torch Trophy Award on behalf of all of the members of Truro Fencing Club. In my opinion the best fencing club in the world.”

Richard Bonehill is a Trustee of The TRFGold Foundation , a registered charity which has been created to build a Fencing Centre of Excellence in Cornwall which will be the envy of the world . The facility will be an inspirational centre which will enable the youth of Cornwall to realise their own personal goals and dreams and to address social issues including teenage delinquency and childhood obesity . It will be the new home of Truro Fencing Club and a competition venue which will attract major fencing tournaments to Cornwall . The project has attracted support from many famous celebrities . Bristol Open Sep 15th & 16th 2007

Jon Salfield came 3rd at the Bristol Open, with James Honeybone and Al Jupp reaching the L8 and taking 5th and 6th respectively. Mike Rogers was placed 9th, giving Truro a new record performance at a major Open. Katie Hendra matched Jon's result by taking 3rd in the women's event, only losing out 15-12 to eventual champion Jo Hutchison. Bristol is one of the biggest events on the calendar, and Truro has a record entry of 21 fencers. There were very promising performances from talented youngsters Jamie Ackerman, Zoe Robinson and Katrina Smith.

World Veteran's Championships Sep 12th 2007

Truro's Richard Bonehill, recently retired as the club's Head Coach, competed at the Men's 50+ sabre event at the World Veteran's Championships in Sydney, Australia today. Richard reached the L16, where he lost narrowly to the eventual silver medallist.

Hamlet Sabre tournament Sep 1st 2007

James Honeybone and Al Jupp reached the Final 8 of the Hamlet Sabre tournament, the first major open of the season for sabre. Jon Salfield and Mike Rogers both made the L16, giving Truro one of its best ever squad performances. Katie Hendra put the icing on the cake with an excellent 2nd place in the Women's Sabre.

UK School Games, August 26th 2007

James Honeybone took a second Gold at the UK School Games, this time in the team sabre. England defeated Scotland in the final 45-32, with James dropping just 2 hits in the entire match

UK School Games, August 25th 2007

James Honeybone took the gold medal in a nail-biting final at the UK Schools Games in Coventry. Seemingly out of the fight a t 14-12 down, James produced 3 stunning hits in rapid succession to win a superb contest. Truro's Jon Salfield was the England Sabre Coach at the event

Duel on the Beach, August 18th 2007

Truro teams took both the foil and sabre title at the 2007 'Duel on the Beach'. Truro's foil team (Matthew Billing, Paul Caine, Hannah Bryars) defeated Portsmouth and the reigning champions Nottingham in the final pool. This is Truro's first ever gold medal in the 'Duel on the Beach' foil event. In the sabre event Truro A (Jon Salfield, James Honeybone and Maggie McWilliams) defeated both Truro B and Laszlo's Fencing in the final to retain the title they won last year.

After the fencing, over 70 people attended the evening barbecue and party at the Watering Hole on Perranporth Beach.

TRURO AGM:

At the  Truro Fencing Club AGM on 26th July 2007 Jon Salfield and the standing committee proposed a restructure of the club, which was passed with 15 in favour and 2 abstentions. Read all about the restructure here. The new committee was elected unanimously.

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS MEDALS FOR TRURO

The Truro Men's and Women's Sabre teams both took silver at the British Championships (22 July 2007). Jon Salfield, Al Jupp and James Honeybone came within in a whisker of taking the title from Brentwood, but couldn't quite cross the line, losing out 45-40 in an exciting final. The women's Sabre team matched this achievement battling through to the final, where they lost out 45-36 to a strong Scimitar team.

In the individual event Katie Hendra took an excellent Bronze medal, losing to the eventual champion, Jo Hutchison.

OTHER NEWS

- Katie Hendra is off to Thailand to compete at the World Student Games in August. Katie is the only British woman sabreur to qualify for the games, which has attracted 12,000 athletes and officials in a multitude of sports.

- Jon Salfield has been appointed Great Britain Sabre Coach for the World Student Games in Thailand. As well as coaching his own fencer, Katie Hendra, Jon will be in charge of the GB Men's Sabre team of Alex O' Connell (Brentwood), Anthony Crutchett (Brentwood), Neil Hutchison (Scimitar) and Harry Moncreiff (Edinburgh).

- Richard Bonehill has been awarded a BFA bronze medal for his services to fencing. Jon Salfield was presented with a similar award at the National Championships

- James Honeybone was presented with a BFA award for his outstanding international season at cadet level.

- Truro fencers completed 12 medical surveys at the club in July, raising £240 for TFC Gold.
