Training Camps
Truro Fencing Club organises regular training camps, including a week-long
Summer Camp and shorter camps at Christmas, Easter and some half-term
holidays.

Originally coached by the legendary Richard Bonehill, Jon Salfield is 34
years old, and has been a Truro fencer for his entire career. Jon is a
successful international sabreur, a member of the British Grand Prix team
for 3 years, England Coach at the 2007 UK School Games, Coach for the GB
Under 20 team at the European Championships, an accredited GB Coach for the
2007 World Youth Championships and GB Coach for the World Student Games (Universiade)
in Bangkok 2007. Jon has coached many successful youth internationals, and
is regarded as one of Britain’s leading coaches. Along with Richard
Bonehill, Jon has master-minded many fencing projects, such as the Cornwall
Pro Sabre, the Duel on the Beach, the Truro Fencing Club development plans,
the TFC Gold project and more!
In May 2007 Jon was awarded the title of 'Cornwall Young Performers Sports
Coach of the Year'.
Jon’s pupils have won numerous national and international medals, and in
2006-2007 season two of his pupils were ranked 1st and 10th in the world
respectively in their age groups.
LEAD COACHES
Sabre - Mike Rogers
A former youth international and
experienced Coach, Mike Rogers is a full-time professional coach and is in
charge of sabre coaching and youth development at Truro Fencing Club. Mike
is passionate about sabre fencing, and works closely with Jon Salfield on
the Fence Cornwall development project
Epee - Lucy Owen
The latest addition to the Truro team, Lucy is
a former British Junior Epee Champion and a former World Cup fencer, as well
as an inspirational epee coach. A language teacher by profession, Lucy is in
charge of epee coaching and youth development at Truro Fencing Club
Foil - Paul Caine

An accomplished foilist and competitive
fencer, Paul is also a teacher by profession. Paul is in charge of foil
coaching and youth foil development at Truro Fencing Club, and is a
motivational coach with high expectations and attention to detail
ASSISTANT COACHES
Maxine McCombie
A qualified coach and successful fencer, Maxine has
fenced at three World Cup events. A personal chef by profession, Maxine
coaches Beginners Course and Fun Fencing, and is a patient and communicative
teacher
Maggie McWilliams
A qualified coach, and also a successful
competitive fencer, Maggie coaches the Beginners Courses and Fun Fencing
groups alongside Maxine. A full-time history teacher, Maggie is a
Commonwealth individual silver medallist and is a lively and inspiring coach
SUPERVISORS
James Honeybone -Sabre.
An international sabreur, British Cadet
Champion, and European Cadet finalist, James assists coaches at Truro
Fencing Club
Matthew Billing
Foil. An international youth fencer, Matthew is the
county's number 1 foilist, and assists coaches at the club
Hannah Bryars - Foil. Also an international fencer, Hannah has competed at numerous World Championships and assists coaches at the club
RETIRED HEAD COACH
Richard Bonehill

Head Coach at Truro for 10 years, Richard Bonehill was named Cornwall Sports
Coach of the Year 2006, and retired in September 2007 to concentrate on his
own training and competing at World Veteran level. Along with his protégé,
Jon Salfield, Richard has masterminded many major projects including the
Duel on the Beach, the Cornwall Pro Sabre, TFC Gold and more. In 2007
Richard coached Jane Hutchison to the gold medal at the World Veterans
Championships in Sydney.
